First steps
Beginner tap
A first tap class for adults. We learn the sounds one at a time, then put them together until they make a rhythm you can dance.
Jamel Brookins teaches Monday, Wednesday and Saturday; another teacher takes Thursday.
An hour, on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturday morning
Classes of up to 12 people
Level: first steps

What a class is like
- 01
Step 1: Arrive and settle
Put on your shoes by the bench and find a spot on the floor. The room rings, so don't worry about being loud.
- 02
Step 2: Warm up
Ankles, calves and a slow march in rhythm, listening to the floor.
- 03
Step 3: The sounds
Heel, toe, step and shuffle, each one alone and then in pairs, until you can hear which is which.
- 04
Step 4: A rhythm
Eight counts that you build from the sounds, said out loud before they are danced.
- 05
Step 5: Cool down
Ankles again, then a minute to compare notes. Everyone's feet are tired by now.
What to wear and bring
Hard-soled shoes
Any shoe with a hard sole will do for the first class. The teacher will say when tap shoes are worth buying.
Clothes you can move in
Leggings, shorts or soft trousers that stop above the ankle so the teacher can see your feet.
Water and a towel
Bring a bottle and a small towel, and leave your phone in the cubbies.
