First steps
Beginner ballet
A first ballet class for adults who have never danced. We start at the barre and stay there until you are ready to leave it.
Marivic Guevarra teaches Tuesday evening and Saturday morning; other teachers cover the rest of the week.
An hour, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and on weekend mornings
Classes of up to 12 people
Level: first steps

What a class is like
- 01
Step 1: Arrive and settle
Leave your shoes and bag in the cubbies and find a spot at the barre. Socks are fine.
- 02
Step 2: Warm up
Slow circles of the shoulders, ankles and hips, with the teacher naming each one as you go.
- 03
Step 3: At the barre
Plié, tendu and a first arm movement, one step at a time. The teacher moves along the barre and shows each step again.
- 04
Step 4: Across the floor
A short combination, counted out loud and danced a few people at a time so everyone has a turn at their own pace.
- 05
Step 5: Cool down
A slow walk and a few minutes to ask anything. Nobody leaves before you've had your questions answered.
What to wear and bring
Clothes you can move in
A fitted or loose top and leggings, shorts or soft trousers, with your hair tied back.
Socks, to start
Bare feet or socks are fine for the first weeks. We will say when ballet slippers would help.
Water and a towel
Bring a bottle and a small towel. Phones stay in the cubbies during class.
